Sometimes it may be important to choose between two unpleasant effects. A particular anti allergy drug may relieve you of itching and rash but could give you tinnitus. So you may choose between having tinnitus and no allergy and getting the allergy but no tinnitus. In fact, there are cases when an alternative pill is unavailable. 

Usually medications that cause tinnitus may produce the dreaded side effect when taken at high doses; otherwise the symptoms may only be negligible. It is worth noting, too, that while one person may not be particularly sensitive to a certain dose, another may display hypersensitivity.  Another cause to look into is Meniere's Disease.
